Coast to Coast Bike Ride

I've been dreaming of riding across the country for many years. Well it looks now that this is the year. Much to my surprise Ryan who is going to MIT asked a few months ago if I would be interested in doing that this summer. He had been talking about it with his friend Jesse, another MIT student. Well I am thrilled. Our scheduled departure is around june 15th. Much to do before that to get ready for the trip. Bonnie has been kind enough to accept caring for Sam. Thanks Bonnie you're super, just like Donna said.

Ryan, Jesse and I are still discussing the route. Ryan and Jesse want to start the trip by taking the Transamerica trail while I favor the Lewis and Clark trail.

This is my version of the route.

This is Ryan and Jesse's plan Ryan's Route.

Can a 67 year old keep pace with two 20 year olds?

Reno River Festival

Drove down to Reno this afternoon to check out the Reno River Festival (Reno River Festival). Today the amateurs were trying out for the open competition to be held Saurday and Sunday. Makes me want to get out the old RPM and get in on the action.

Playboating. The boats are very short compared to even a few years ago.

Reno Ride with Denny

Headed to Reno this morning to do a ride with Denny. We got a late start because I noticed I had a bad tire and had to buy a new one before we could get going. Rode about 23 miles up and over the hill from Patagonia and down Lakeside to the turnaround point. Rode about 25 miles on the Litespeed.

May Powder Day

At 6AM this morning there is 4 inches of snow on the deck and snowing steadily. I'm going to grab my powder boards and head to Alpine.

Snow on back deck at 6AM, Sam looks confused.

Welcome to Alpine

Sparse Crowd

Roundhouse Quad was the only lift running $29 for a ticket

Snowing with 6 inches new when I arrived at 9AM

Skiing was fun but snow was heavy and wet. Novel for this time of year but actually I would prefer a blue sky day with typical spring conditions viz ice in the morning and slush in the afternoon.

Shuffle while you pedal

Well I am now the proud owner of a new Ipod Shuffle MP3 player. I bought the 1 GB model that holds around 240 songs. Well I loaded it up and wore it on my ride yesterday. Yeah I know that's not a good idea from a safety point of view as you can't hear the traffic as well with the earphones blaring rock music. But anyway it worked out great. I found I could still hear traffic noises and it made the long slow climbs much more enjoyable. I will probably use it a lot. I simply wore it on a lanyard around my neck.

The Shuffle is so small and hardly weighs anything.

Reno farm animals

On Saturday I rode in the Reno area along the foothills south from Highway 80 down to the Mount Rose Highway and a few miles further. Weather was threatning but no rain. Started at around 12:30PM and finished around 5PM as I recall. Total of 43 miles on the Litespeed.

Verdi Ride

Cycled between the Patagonia store in Reno and Verdi this afternoon a distance of around 21 miles round trip. Pretty ride but I forgot my camera again hence no pictures. The ride includes a new section of bike trail paralleling Hwy 80 for about 3/4 of a mile which now allows cyclists to completly avoid having to ride on the busy Hwy.
