Crash bent the fork

I learned today that the Maui crash bent the IF fork on my Seven bicycle.

My bike had 4.5cm of rake, the horizontal distance from the extention of the headtube centerline shown as the red dotted line to the centerline of the front axle.

After the accident you can clearly see the fork has been bent nearly eliminating the rake. I think this was caused when the brakes locked up and not by any impact forces.

The Ride Up

Snapshots taken of John Smay and I on the ride up Mt Haleakala on Monday November 14th. It was 36 miles and almost 10,000 feet of climbing. There are 25 photos so this post may take a while to load.

We started at around 7:15AM. Did not want to run oput of daylight like I did last year

Stopped for coffee here.

Tuneup for Haleakala Ride

On Sunday John Smay and I did a 20 mile tuneup ride on Hwy 37 starting at the Tedeschi Winery

Kaye and Lance Whitney invited John Smay and I over to have dinner at their home on the slopes of Haleakala after the ride.

Lance. Little did I know that less than 24 hours later after my wreck I would see Lance again at the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he works as an anesthesiologist .

I learned that Lance could really play the piano

Maui Aloha Classic

Landed on Maui on Thursday November 10th around noon. The next day, Friday John and I went over to Ho'okipa Beach to watch the Aloha Classic Wave Championships (Aloha Classic)

Rental car got a little muddy when we forded a puddle on the dirt road from the highway to the "Jaws" surfing view spot. Road got so bad we gave up and turned around.

Saturday (Crash + 5 days)

Went to general physician (Dr Joe Lombard) and plastic surgeon (Dr Jellinek) yesterday. Dr Lombard ordered XRAYS of my right hand and my rib cage. I'll go over and pick up radiology reports today at noon. Dr Jellinek the plastics guy was pretty optimistic about me coming out looking pretty whole. He said I was going to look pretty bad for a few weeks though. This morning my face feels stiff and uncomfortable from the scabbing but I think the swelling has subsided a bit. Can you see the difference in the photo?

Friday Morning (Accident + 4 days)

Went to two dentists yesterday. Verdict on my upper front teeth was that they were shoved inward so my bite is off as my lower teeth now hit the backs of the upper front teeth. Dr's think the teeth can probsbly be saved and fixed either by a combo of grinding and capping or possibly orthodontia. I think I'll go the grinding and capping route. This is what I look like this morning. Face is still swollen with the nose and upper lip swollen the most, Discovered I have a sore rib while I was lugging my carry on between planes on the trip home yesterday. I See my general physician at 1:30 this afternoon and the plastic surgeon at 5:30PM.

Maui and the crash

Went to Maui to ride up Mt Haleakawa like I did last year while again staying at my friend John Smay's condo in Kiehe. Went to the Aloha classic wind surfing contest on Thursday. Went for a bike rides on Saturday and Sunday. Lance and Kaye Whitney invited me (and John) over to their house Sunday night for donner which was awesome. Started biking up Mt Haleakala at 6:10AM on Monday morning. Rode up kinda slow as John had not really trained for the climb. Ride up went well. Got up there at sround 3PM. I felt like I could have done some more. There was the matter of the ride down. It was cold but I was OK as I had enough layers on. John being the more prudent person rode down st 20 to 25 MPH, Me I went down full tilt and stopped periodically to wait for John. Well when I reached the entrance to the park about a third of the way down I slowed suddenly (too suddenly) to avoid a cattle guard and went over the bars face first.

My injuries included road rash on the legs and hands, brused and chipped teeth, Broken finger ligament, severe cuts and bruses on my face. These include a badly lacerated upper lip which will require plactic surgery, broken nose, a bump and lacerations on my upper left forhead. Other than those imjuries I survived pretty much inact. No other broken bones, no brain concussions, neck and back are fine.

Northstar to open on November 19th?

I'm scheduled to start work teaching skiing at Northstar at Tahoe on the 19th a couple of days after I get back from Maui. I took a ride over there this afternoon on the Harley to see how the construction of the new base facilities is going. The gondola was actually running although the rest of the area looked like a real work in progress.
