Skied a couple of runs at Northstar today. Weather was cold and foggy with a few snow flurries. Skiing was actually pretty good although I'm getting kind of bored by the limited terrain that is open. The bumps on the Plunge and on Grouse Alley were fun. Northstar employee orientation is tomorrow. Training for returning instructors is on Sunday the 18th and my official first day of work is on Monday the 19th. My upper lip is still pretty swollen and sore. I see the plastics guy (Dr Jellinek) tomorrow at 5:30 after the Northstar orientation meeting.
Went skiing at Northstar today. Managed to keep my face out of the snow but I still noticed that my upper lip was unusually sensitive to the cold. Overall though it felt good to be skiing. Wallace and I plan to go out again in the morning for a couple of hours.
Photo taken today of Ken Bruielly and myself in front of Big Springs Lodge. You can see my new chipped eye tooth in the picture.
Today's self portrait. Looks like I may not require a face transplant after all. (Face Transplant). You possible doners can now relax. Every day I get better looking as more scabs are fall off revealing areas of pink new skin. My dentist recommends that my 4 front teeth be capped probably sometime in early January after my lip has healed.
I learned today that the Maui crash bent the IF fork on my Seven bicycle.
My bike had 4.5cm of rake, the horizontal distance from the extention of the headtube centerline shown as the red dotted line to the centerline of the front axle.
After the accident you can clearly see the fork has been bent nearly eliminating the rake. I think this was caused when the brakes locked up and not by any impact forces.
Snapshots taken of John Smay and I on the ride up Mt Haleakala on Monday November 14th. It was 36 miles and almost 10,000 feet of climbing. There are 25 photos so this post may take a while to load.
We started at around 7:15AM. Did not want to run oput of daylight like I did last year
Stopped for coffee here.
The entrance to the park near where I had my wreck on the ride down.
On Sunday John Smay and I did a 20 mile tuneup ride on Hwy 37 starting at the Tedeschi Winery
Kaye and Lance Whitney invited John Smay and I over to have dinner at their home on the slopes of Haleakala after the ride.
Lance. Little did I know that less than 24 hours later after my wreck I would see Lance again at the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he works as an anesthesiologist .
Landed on Maui on Thursday November 10th around noon. The next day, Friday John and I went over to Ho'okipa Beach to watch the Aloha Classic Wave Championships (Aloha Classic)
Rental car got a little muddy when we forded a puddle on the dirt road from the highway to the "Jaws" surfing view spot. Road got so bad we gave up and turned around.
Went to general physician (Dr Joe Lombard) and plastic surgeon (Dr Jellinek) yesterday. Dr Lombard ordered XRAYS of my right hand and my rib cage. I'll go over and pick up radiology reports today at noon. Dr Jellinek the plastics guy was pretty optimistic about me coming out looking pretty whole. He said I was going to look pretty bad for a few weeks though. This morning my face feels stiff and uncomfortable from the scabbing but I think the swelling has subsided a bit. Can you see the difference in the photo?
My name is Andrew but I usually go by Andy. I have two sons Robert and Ryan (Bavetta.com) (CrazyBuilders.com) and three grandchildren Scott, Lindsey and Jill. I spent most of my life in the Los Angeles area. I moved to Northern California (Truckee) after I retired in 1997 from Hughes Aircraft Co in El Segundo, CA.
I enjoy outdoor activities the most. Lately my passions have been skiing in the winter and biking (road and mountain) during the summer. I also enjoy WW kayaking but have not boated much lately. I prefer the mountains and the beach to the flatlands. I like to be around people but I'm also OK hanging out alone. These days I work in the winter as a ski instructor at Northstar at Tahoe in Truckee CA. I love dogs and I am not too fond of cats. I have a HD DirecTV/TIVO setup and I use it mainly to watch news/political shows including The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and the Colbert Report with Stephan Colbert, Sacramento Kings basketball, USC football, World Cup FIS skiing and the cycling tour. I like to travel but prefer to combine it with some sort of outdoor activity like biking.
