Friday Morning (Accident + 4 days)

Went to two dentists yesterday. Verdict on my upper front teeth was that they were shoved inward so my bite is off as my lower teeth now hit the backs of the upper front teeth. Dr's think the teeth can probsbly be saved and fixed either by a combo of grinding and capping or possibly orthodontia. I think I'll go the grinding and capping route. This is what I look like this morning. Face is still swollen with the nose and upper lip swollen the most, Discovered I have a sore rib while I was lugging my carry on between planes on the trip home yesterday. I See my general physician at 1:30 this afternoon and the plastic surgeon at 5:30PM.

Maui and the crash

Went to Maui to ride up Mt Haleakawa like I did last year while again staying at my friend John Smay's condo in Kiehe. Went to the Aloha classic wind surfing contest on Thursday. Went for a bike rides on Saturday and Sunday. Lance and Kaye Whitney invited me (and John) over to their house Sunday night for donner which was awesome. Started biking up Mt Haleakala at 6:10AM on Monday morning. Rode up kinda slow as John had not really trained for the climb. Ride up went well. Got up there at sround 3PM. I felt like I could have done some more. There was the matter of the ride down. It was cold but I was OK as I had enough layers on. John being the more prudent person rode down st 20 to 25 MPH, Me I went down full tilt and stopped periodically to wait for John. Well when I reached the entrance to the park about a third of the way down I slowed suddenly (too suddenly) to avoid a cattle guard and went over the bars face first.

My injuries included road rash on the legs and hands, brused and chipped teeth, Broken finger ligament, severe cuts and bruses on my face. These include a badly lacerated upper lip which will require plactic surgery, broken nose, a bump and lacerations on my upper left forhead. Other than those imjuries I survived pretty much inact. No other broken bones, no brain concussions, neck and back are fine.

Northstar to open on November 19th?

I'm scheduled to start work teaching skiing at Northstar at Tahoe on the 19th a couple of days after I get back from Maui. I took a ride over there this afternoon on the Harley to see how the construction of the new base facilities is going. The gondola was actually running although the rest of the area looked like a real work in progress.

Boca to Stampede

Rode the Bocca to Stampede ride yesterday. Pushing it. It was cold and threatening to rain/snow on us plus Kelly had some sort of physical problem on the ride

Here I am in my cold weather gear.

Spotted several Bald Eagles. See this one in the tree?

Kelly takes a breather.

Maui before the snow

Leave for Maui on Thursday. I'm taking my bike and if all goes well I'll take a ride up Mt Haleakala. Rode up it a year ago and ran out of daylight and had to hitch a ride down. Plan to start earlier this time (The Haole Who Rode Up Haleakala)

On the ride up last year. Still thought I haad plenty of time.

At the 9000 foot mark it was starting to get late.

I finally reached Haleakala's summit at Sunset. Not enough daylight left to ride down.

San Francisco

Jan and I spent some time this weekend in San Francisco. One of the things we did was to tour the recently re-done de Young Art Museum (Young Museum)

Took a cable car ride.

Awesome Smile!

Winter Preparations

Put the driveway snow stakes up last Thursday. The deck furniture is put away. The off road motorcycle and its trailer are in storage. The snowblower has been serviced and has a full tank of gas. The cabin at Grayeagle has been winterized. The hot tub is in good working order. Not much else to do but wait for the white stuff.

Oh yeah Sam still has to put his winter coat on.

Winter is not far off. Donner Peak already has a dusting of snow.

Rainbow Lodge

Looked at the weather report and decided that today might be the last nice day for biking for a while as there was snow/rain in the forecast. Started at my house and rode to rainbow lodge and back about 43 miles roundtrip. The forecast looked better tonight.

Me at Donner Lake. The lake looks really placid. I look kind of pudgy. There must be something in my jacket pocket.

The Seven resting against the wall at Rainbow Lodge. From the look of the sandbags on the wall I figure the Lodge owners are expecting a high water level on the South Fork of the Yuba River this fall/winter or spring.

View today from Sugar Bowl parking lot. Mt Lincoln on the left with a dusting of snow and Mt Disney on the right.

Closer view of Mt lincoln from same spot.

Nice ride with little traffic.

Self Portrait. I definitely look taller.
